An eco-friendly home is a growing trend. Not only is opting for more sustainable decorations a great way to support the health of our planet, but it can help sell your home too!
According to UK statistics, more than 70%[1] of millennials are willing to pay extra for an eco-friendly property. Opting for sustainable Christmas decorations when you're selling up is a great way to keep your own festive spirits high, without deterring buyers.
If you're looking for more eco-friendly ways to decorate your home at Christmas (for selling reasons or just yourself), here are four decoration ideas from the Groves Residential team, you'll love.
1. Make Dried Citrus Fruits
Here's a quick and easy eco-friendly Christmas decoration. DIY dried citrus fruits made from oranges or lemons! All you have to do is slice them up and bake them in the oven at a low temperature for around 2-3 hours.
You can use your dried fruits to create festive garlands to hang around your house. Or you can use them to make your own baubles or as a centrepiece on your dining table. They'll make your home look like Christmas – and smell like it too!
2. Opt For a Living Christmas Tree
Forget plastic trees – and forget all about real Christmas trees that have been chopped down too! Instead, opt for a living Christmas tree for your home this year.
The best thing about living Christmas trees isn't the pine smell (which is amazing!). It's the fact that you can plant it outside in your garden after use. Or you can keep it in its pot and use it again next year! Just make sure you only keep your living Christmas tree indoors for 1-2 weeks at most before planting outside.
3. Make a Recycled Paper Wreath
In the lead up to Christmas, keep hold of any paper you'd normally throw away. Or dig out old Christmas cards and wrapping paper from previous years.
Using a festive-shaped cutter, like a holly or star design, cut out shapes in your paper. You can then stick or staple them to a circular ring and you'll have your very own eco-friendly wreath!
4. Sow Winter Bulbs
Some flowers are known to bloom over winter, like Snowdrops, White Cyclamen and Winter Clematis. Plant these winter bulbs in October or November and watch your garden bloom a snowy white come Christmas time and into the New Year.
Since some of these winter plants are known to attract a visit from bees and other insects when the weather warms up, you'll be creating an eco-friendly garden as well as a winter one!
